Chapter Thirteen

They were out of time.

Marcos locked his hands together behind his back as he climbed awkwardly out of the truck. Somehow, it was even colder here than inside that truck bed, lying on the cold metal. Wind whipped around him, raising goose bumps all over his body. Or maybe that was due to their current predicament.

He’d managed to saw the ropes against a rusted-out spot in the truck bed, fraying them enough while they’d driven that he thought a hard yank might break them the rest of the way. Not that it mattered with two guards, each holding semiautomatic weapons.

Behind him, Brenna was trying—and failing—to climb out of the truck bed by herself. She was hunched over the edge, one leg dangling down, her face pressed to the metal like she was trying not to throw up.

One of the guards swore and went to yank her the rest of the way when the second one warned, “Don’t. You want her puking on you? Wait a second unless you want to burn your clothes when we get out of here. Carlton said not to bring any DNA back with us.”

Stay calm, Marcos reminded himself, standing beside the truck, pasting a dazed expression on his own face and hoping they’d think he was disoriented from the rough ride. He was closer to the tree line; Brenna was closer to the edge of the cliff. He wanted to step toward her, terrified one of those guards was going to just give her a hard shove and send her over.

But he didn’t move, because he knew any fast movement on his part might cause them to do the same thing. Instead, he spoke. “You drive us out of here instead, and the DEA will pay a hefty reward.”

The guards looked at each other and laughed, but Marcos had already known it was a losing play. He just wanted their attention off Brenna long enough for her to move on her own—preferably closer to him.

And finally, she did. She took a deep breath and hauled herself the rest of the way out of the truck bed, stumbling over and then slumping to the ground beside him.

“Shouldn’t have messed with Carlton,” one of the guards mocked her, striding over and putting his face near hers.

Marcos’s pulse picked up. The guards were just like Carlton. And they were high on their new roles as his first line of defense since Carlton and Brenna had taken out the others.

He purposely didn’t look at the second guard, just addressed the one leaning over Brenna. “Come on, man. He outweighs her by at least double. That wasn’t exactly a fair fight.”

Get closer, he silently willed the second guard, even as he tried to fight with his bonds behind his back. He kept his movements small, not wanting to alert them to what he was doing. But if Carlton wanted no DNA, that meant he probably didn’t want them shot. No chance of blood splatter if they just jumped off the cliff on their own.
